Social transformation - 2020 retrospective
Ladies, gentlemen, pirates and Jedis, it’s that time of the year again, to reflect on a year, one like none other!
Whilst 2020’s given earthers good reasons to forget about it there are quite a few for which it ought to be remembered. It’s been a year like any other, with wins and lessons.
For social transformation, 2020’s been nothing short of epic!
2020 marked ten years for Peace Through Prosperity (PTP), in those ten years we have engaged with 1,305 micro-entrepreneurs (direct beneficiaries), had a positive impact on an estimated 8,480 people (indirect beneficiaries), created 200 jobs (that we know of), continue to have the privilege of working with 22 marginalised communities and as of December 2020 have established chapters in Karachi and Sanaa.
Over a 10 year period PTP's teams have enabled, mentored and coached 1,305 individuals to inspect and adapt at operational, tactical and strategic altitudes for their micro-enterprises. Other than the 1,305 individuals many other micro-entrepreneurs learned by osmosis. Recurring public exercises leveraging accessible tools like empathy mapping and retrospectives, that started as a spectacle have now become acceptable tools to aid discussions and drive improvement within communities.
Another stellar moment for Peace Through Prosperity this year has been partnering with Shahid Afridi Foundation in Rehri Goth, a diverse marginalised community of 70,000+ people, a community both the teams are familiar with, having worked win the community for several years. and out came an experiment.
The conversation kind of went like this:
PTP - yo SAF heros! We both work in Rehri Goth in Karachi!
SAF - yay! You lot up to some good! let's do something together!
PTP - yay! How about we teach parents of kids who attend your school in Rehri Goth?
SAF - yay! However teach them what?
PTP - our mini-MBA! It’s like an MBA only mini!
SAF - what’s the value?
PTP - individual micro-entrepreneurs learn to inspect and adapt, improve as business managers, gain financial stability and growth, and with that build a better future for themselves, their family and community.
SAF - epic! let's experiment!
That was back in Feb’ish, then Covid happened!
However in October 2020 between lockdowns in Karachi, both SAF and PTP teams made it happen! Together we managed to get the first group of micro-entrepreneurs through PTP's mini-MBA program. The feedback from participants has been extremely encouraging, you can watch some of the vids here, here and here. Looking ahead as soon as lockdown eases in Karachi the teams plan to start training the teaching staff at SAF's Rehri Goth School in implementing the mini-MBA program by themselves.
Another stellar moment for Peace Through Prosperity this year has been progress the Sanaa chapter has made! The team came back after a five month lockdown with scheduled monthly classes from September. And in the grand scheme got a little closer to self-sufficiency!
As for Ghana, Covid Et al. kept us from jump starting Accra, however we’re putting that right for 2021 this very week. #WatchThisSpace
Our overall velocity was lower than we’d estimated for the year, we were aiming for Accra and one other city to be online by Dec 2020, however the reduced stretch enabled us to focus on Sanaa and Karachi a lot more.
Again in 2020, we met some and got to know some beautiful human beings, you know who you are. Thank you for making the time to get to know us too. #MuchLove
