Social transformation - 2019 retrospective

Yellow post-it notes on a wall with Arabic writings

Nine years on, Peace Through Prosperity has come into its own in many ways.

Ladies, gentlemen, pirates and Jedis, it’s that time of the year again, we are done with our 2019 retrospective and it’s fresh off proverbial press for your perusal. Closing another year was as ever rewarding!

Reflections from 2019

We went past facilitating 1,000+ individuals, their families (6,942 people) and community (with 130+ jobs created) to jumpstart their desired narrative for change.

Peace Through Prosperity - Sanaa Yemen Development 002.jpg

We started a chapter in Sanaa, Yemen, after four years of search, trail and error we found a Jedi on the ground and since June 2019 built a team around Yusra. From July till December 2019 our Sanaa chapter has delivered 6 mini-MBA cohorts and positively affected the lives and livelihood of 105 micro entrepreneurs: 9 men, 96 women including 15 with additional needs (hearing and speech impaired entrepreneurs).

Our Sanaa chapter took off in leaps and bounds, including registration of the chapter in Yemen under Development Through Prosperity, bringing them a step closer to complete self organisation.

In Sanaa we also experimented with one mini-MBA cohort run with Yodet, however that did not go as planned given Yodet’s target audience as an incubator is very different to that for the mini-MBA, nevertheless we had a varied mix of micro-entrepreneurs attend the Yodet mini-MBA, 13 men.

Peace Through Prosperity - Karachi Development 002.jpg

In Karachi our in-house team delivered the mini-MBA program to 160 micro entrepreneurs, split between 140 women and 20 men over 6 cohorts.

Whilst 2018 had been the year of unmet expectations, 2019 was the year to translate lessons into actions! we found partners to scale that are earnest, share our values, principles, unrelenting need to get to done and with them we experimented and scaled! We partnered with Ihsaas Trust in Karachi and added two more Jedis to our rolodex! Shahzeb and Abdullah! Ihsaas ran three MBA cohorts and took the mini MBA to a further 80 micro entrepreneurs (men) in Karachi.

In 2019 Peace Through Prosperity reached 358 new participants and indirectly benefited the lives of an additional 2300+ people in communities across Karachi and Sanaa.

We ran another experiment with Yodet (a tech incubator) in Sanaa towards the end of October, taking a set of new programmes we’ve been developing to introduce agility and design thinking to entrepreneurs in tech and beyond from marginalised communities. The experiment was a partial success, we learnt a lot about messaging our content at the right level, we inspected and adapted.

In Karachi we re-ran the revised experiment in December with Ihsaas Trust and Hunar Foundation and in iteration 2.0 we got the content and format right for the audience! Building on its success we are working with our new partners to incorporate Agility, Scrum and Design Thinking into Hunar Foundation’s core curriculum for their vocational training courses in 2020.

Our velocity in Karachi was lower than we’d estimated for the year, however we had a lot more going on for our small team and some tough decisions to make on where to allocate limited resources between Karachi and Sanaa.

In 2019 we recalibrated our audience too, we started focusing more on women micro entrepreneurs. We've learnt through experience over the years that when we teach and empower women, knowledge and impact travels further through osmosis!

In 2019 we had another first! Peace Through Prosperity got selected to be Scrum@Scale’s charity of the year and received $3,500 from their hybrid conference Scrum Around The World in December. Thank you Thoralf Klatt and Renee Tsielepi for proposing and supporting Peace Through Prosperity as Scrum@Scale’s charity of the year.

Again in 2019, we met some and got to know some beautiful human beings, you know who you are. Thank you for making the time to get to know us too. #MuchLove

Drop Solid re-sponsored Peace Through Prosperity for 2020 (fourth year running), thank you guys, and Dominique as always, thank you mate.

Peace Through Prosperity's annual budget for 2020 is estimated at £30,835, of which, as of February 2020 we have raised £5,800.00 from our sponsors and £12,000 from our founders, leaving us with a shortfall of £13,035 for the year. If you’re wondering how to contribute towards Peace Through Prosperity’s 2020 budget, you can donate here.

Looking ahead, 2020 is again about scaling through partners whilst leveraging an open source approach. We’ve been talking to prospective partners in Ghana, Venezuela, Iraq and Syria. Peace Through Prosperity’s goals for 2020 include adding a minimum of two new cities, scale further in the ones we’re in and if we have our way change the world for the better for everyone in a single year.

The job that needs to be done is far from done, however we are making good progress towards it. It’s not at a velocity of our liking but we’re inspecting, learning, adapting and staying at it.

Thank you for sharing and supporting this journey!
